Taman Negara, Malaysia's premier national park, is a treasure trove of natural beauty and biodiversity. Spanning across the states of Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu, this ancient rainforest, believed to be over 130 million years old, offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the Earth's past. Home to a vast array of flora and fauna, including some of the world's rarest species, Taman Negara is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. Located approximately 240 kilometers northeast of Kuala Lumpur, Taman Negara is easily accessible via a 3-4 hour drive. The journey itself is a scenic one, showcasing Malaysia's lush landscapes and charming rural vistas. For those preferring a more relaxed approach, Malaya Travel offers private transfers that ensure a comfortable and convenient trip from the bustling capital to the tranquility of the park.
Our favorite accommodation: Mutiara Taman Negara Resort
At the heart of Taman Negara, nestled along the banks of the Tembeling River, lies the Mutiara Taman Negara Resort. This eco-friendly resort offers a harmonious blend of modern comforts and rustic charm, providing the perfect base for exploring the wonders of the national park. Accommodations range from cozy wooden chalets to spacious family suites, all designed to immerse guests in the natural surroundings while offering essential amenities. A new favorite is the newly renovated 2-Bedroom Bungalows that offer modern and spacious accomodations for families. While Mutiara Taman Negara has become more expensive over the years, the experience here is still more affordable than in Borneo, and this resort offers very comfortable accommodations after all-day adventures. Guests can enjoy a range of facilities, including a restaurant serving delicious local and international cuisine, a riverside bar, and guided nature tours that enhance the overall experience.

Special Adventure: 4 Days Taman Negara Adventure Tour with Lata Berkoh Hike
For those seeking a more adventurous experience, Malaya Travel offers the exhilarating 4 Days Taman Negara Adventure with Lata Berkoh Hike. This expedition is perfect for thrill-seekers looking to immerse themselves in the heart of the rainforest and requires the ability to hike in difficult terrains. It is quite an advanced hike, ideal for those with a passion for challenging outdoor activities.
Day 1: Arrival and Night Safari
Begin your adventure with a private transfer from Kuala Lumpur to Labu Sentral Jetty, where you'll embark on a scenic boat trip to Mutiara Taman Negara Resort. In the afternoon, visit Hornbill Valley for bird watching, the perfect time to observe hornbills searching for food amid the stunning scenery of this 130-million-year-old rainforest. As night falls, embark on a 4WD drive through an oil palm plantation to search for small animals such as wild boars, deer, snakes, leopard cats, Malayan civet cats, and various insects. While it may seem unusual to drive through an oil palm plantation rather than directly into the jungle, the palm oil fruit attracts a high number of rats, which in turn attract predators. This unique approach enhances your chances of spotting elusive wildlife that might otherwise remain hidden.
Day 2: Lata Berkoh Hike
On the second day of your Taman Negara adventure, start with a trek to Lata Berkoh, an 8.5 km journey through the rainforest that takes approximately 7 hours. Meet your nature guide at the operation counter in Kuala Tahan, where you'll collect your packed lunch and drinking water, complete a Declaration Form for submission to the Wildlife Office, and receive approval from the Park Ranger to begin your expedition. Lata Berkoh offers a captivating blend of river navigation, rapid streams, rocky terrain, fishing spots, and a picturesque waterfall framed by a stunning archway of trees. After exploring and swimming in the refreshing waters of Lata Berkoh, take a boat ride back to a lookout point such as Chegar Anjing or Tabing Hide, located 3 hours from the park headquarters. Chegar Anjing, once an airstrip and now secondary forest, attracts diverse bird species like coucals and jungle fowl, and the artificial saltlick here draws deer, tapir, and Seladang. Settle into the jungle hut for the night, where you can cook, swim, sunbathe, and enjoy a jungle dinner while observing wildlife.
Day 3: Canopy Walkway and Cultural Encounter
On the third day of your Taman Negara adventure, start with a boat trip back to Mutiara Taman Negara Resort, followed by breakfast at the resort. Afterward, set out for a boat trip to the Canopy Walkway, a highlight of Taman Negara. Walk across the world’s longest canopy walkway, stretching 530 meters and 40 meters above the ground, for an unparalleled view of the rainforest’s flora and fauna. This walkway, originally built for research, has become a major attraction, managed and supervised by the Wildlife Department for safety. Lunch is provided in the resort.
Next, visit the Orang Asli Batek settlement to experience the traditional lifestyle of these indigenous people. Discover their skills in using bamboo blowpipes and making fire, with translations provided by your guide. In the afternoon, enjoy the thrill of rapid shooting along Sungai Tembeling. Ride through seven exhilarating rapids in a wooden boat, starting from Kuala Tahan jetty. In the evening, relax at your charming resort.
Day 4: Departure
On your last day, enjoy a relaxing morning at the resort before transferring to your next destination.
