IPOH & PERAK
Top Highlights, Tours, Hotels, and Experiences
Just a few hours' drive from the bustling metropolis of Kuala Lumpur lies the charming state of Perak, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. While Kuala Lumpur dazzles with its modernity, Perak offers a different kind of allure – one rooted in rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. In the last couple of years, Ipoh, the most popular city in Perak has emerged as one of the most beloved Malaysian destinations that is loved by backpackers and guests on private tours as well. We also love Ipoh and its neighboring cities, and we are adding more and more Perak attractions into our tour itineraries to showcase the rich heritage of the country on our Malaysia tours.
The state has a royal heritage that dates back centuries. The Sultanate of Perak, one of the oldest in the country, echoes tales of regal splendor, which can still be witnessed at the majestic Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar. The state's tin mining legacy is literally carved in its landscape. Once the world's largest producer of tin, Perak's prosperity soared on the back of this industry, attracting migrants from afar, particularly from China, to work in its mines. Perak's cultural tapestry is as vibrant as its landscapes, with a melting pot of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous Orang Asli communities. This diversity is celebrated in Perak's cuisine, a fusion of flavors, from Ipoh's renowned "bean sprout chicken rice" to the comforting warmth of "Ipoh hor fun." But Perak's charm isn't limited to its history alone; its natural beauty attracts millions of visitors. From the lush rainforests of the Royal Belum State Park to the largest mangrove forests line its coast, Perak's landscapes offer a sanctuary for both nature lovers and adventurers alike. Despite its rich history, Perak continues to evolve, embracing modernity while preserving its heritage. Urban centers like Ipoh buzz with activity, fueled by a growing tourism industry and a commitment to sustainable development.
Best Time To Visit
Ipoh is a year-round destination with something to offer in every season. The best time to visit is between December and February, when the weather is driest and temperatures range between 23°C and 30°C, making it ideal for exploring. If you’re planning a beach trip to nearby Pangkor Island, the best period is from December to April. Be mindful of the monsoon season from August to November, when tropical storms may affect sightseeing. To avoid crowds, try to skip school holidays in September and December. For a unique experience, visit just before Chinese New Year when the city comes alive with festive preparations.
Who This Destination Is For
Ipoh and the state of Perak are so diverse and colorful that they offer something for everyone. History enthusiasts will appreciate Ipoh’s colonial architecture and cultural heritage, while food lovers can indulge in its famous cuisine, like white coffee and street food. Nature lovers can explore the stunning caves, lush gardens, and nearby hot springs. Families will enjoy the Lost World of Tambun theme park, while beachgoers can relax at Pangkor Island. Adventure seekers can explore the Belum Rainforest or visit the Bukit Merah Orangutan Island. With so much variety, Ipoh and Perak have something for every traveler’s interest.
Duration of Stay
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly how many days to spend in Perak, as it offers a wide variety of experiences. For Ipoh, 1 or 2 nights are usually ideal if you’re touring Malaysia, but consider an extra night if you’re staying at the Banjaran Hot Springs. Families might add a full day for the Lost World of Tambun. Pangkor Laut Resort is a destination on its own, perfect for relaxing on its stunning beaches as long as you feel comfortable. If visiting Belum Rainforest, plan to spend at least 2 nights there. For more exploration, add a day trip to visit Kuala Kangsar, Bukit Merah Orangutan Island, or Kuala Sepetang on the way to Penang.
How to Get There
Getting to Ipoh or anywhere in Perak easy, whether you're coming from Kuala Lumpur or Penang. Located in the western part of Peninsular Malaysia, Perak is well-connected by road and rail. Driving from Kuala Lumpur takes about 2-3 hours, while the drive from Penang to Ipoh takes around 2 hours. Ipoh also has a small regional airport with limited flights, but the larger international airports in Kuala Lumpur and Penang offer more options. If you prefer public transport, you can take the train or bus from major cities, making Perak an accessible and convenient destination. Pangkor Laur Resort is best accessible from Kuala Lumpur International Airport
